TSRTC's Mahalakshmi Scheme: Empowering Women and Boosting Bus Occupancy Rates

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation's (TSRTC) Mahalakshmi scheme, offering free bus rides for women, has witnessed a remarkable response since its launch on December 9. In just 11 days, over three crore women passengers have availed themselves of this initiative, averaging an impressive 30 lakh passengers daily out of the total 51 lakh passengers in the state.

Before the inception of the Mahalakshmi scheme, approximately 40 percent of women utilized RTC buses. However, with the implementation of this initiative, the percentage has surged to 62 percent, showcasing a significant increase in female ridership. The overall occupancy rate of the corporation has seen a substantial rise from 69 percent (up to November 23) to an impressive 88 percent following the introduction of the Mahalakshmi Scheme.

An encouraging development is the achievement of 100 percent Occupancy Ratio (OR) by 17 depots on December 16, 20 depots on December 17, and 45 depots on December 18. Recognizing this success, TSRTC Managing Director VC Sajjanar conducted a virtual meeting with the drivers and conductors from approximately 30 depots.

Addressing certain concerns, Sajjanar emphasized that photocopies of identity cards, whether in physical or digital form, are not eligible for free travel. The Mahalakshmi Scheme is exclusively applicable to women belonging to Telangana State, as per government directives. Women from other states are required to pay the fare and obtain a ticket.

Looking ahead, Sajjanar shared that around 2,050 new buses will be added to the fleet within the next four to five months. This includes 1,050 diesel and 1,000 electric buses, which will be phased in gradually. Between December 16 and 18, several depots in rural and urban areas achieved 100 percent occupancy continuously for three days, reflecting the scheme's positive impact.

In response to the growing demand, TSRTC is gearing up to introduce 1,050 new diesel buses, including Pallevelugu, Express, and a few AC buses. Additionally, 1,050 electric buses are slated to be introduced by March 2024. The Mahalakshmi Scheme stands not only as a testament to women's empowerment but also as a catalyst for increased public transportation usage in the state.
