AI Voice Spoofing Scam: UP Official Loses Rs 1.58 Lakh

A government official in Uttar Pradesh fell victim to a scam, losing Rs 1.58 lakh, when a fraudster employed AI voice spoofing to mimic the voice of the official's relative.

The incident occurred on December 6, and the official, identified as Prashant (name changed), filed a First Information Report (FIR) on December 21.

According to Prashant, he received a call from an unknown number, where the caller fabricated a distressing story about the urgent need for funds to cover medical expenses for a friend in Lucknow.

The caller's voice closely resembled that of Prashant's brother-in-law, a judge based in New Delhi, leading him to transfer the money to the account provided by the caller.

Upon later verification, Prashant discovered that his brother-in-law had not made the call, and he realized he had been deceived.

An FIR has been lodged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act, as confirmed by J.K. Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Hussainganj.
