Princess Diana's Dress Smashes Auction Record

A blue and black evening dress worn by Princess Diana in the 1980s has set a new record, fetching $1,143,000—11 times its estimated value at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills. Designed by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury, the dress featured a black velvet bodice embroidered with stars and graced significant occasions in Italy's Florence (April 1985) and Vancouver, Canada (May 1986).

The dress, part of Julien’s “Hollywood Legends” auction, was not the sole star of the show. A blush-pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana in her engagement portrait in 1981 also commanded attention, selling for $381,000—almost four times its estimate.

This follows a September auction at Sotheby's, where a red sweater worn by Princess Diana to a 1981 polo match of Prince Charles fetched over $1.1 million. The sweater, from the British luxury knitwear brand Warm and Wonderful, was discovered in an attic in March and surpassed the prices of many other objects tied to the "People's Princess."

The symbolic significance of these fashion pieces lies not only in their exquisite design but also in their role in shaping the narrative of Princess Diana within the royal family. The continued fascination and high prices at auctions underscore the enduring legacy of Princess Diana and the public's deep connection to her iconic style.
